I recently read an article that claims that Americans are obsessed with grooming themselves. We spend more time with grooming, on the average, than any other group of people. I do not know if I am obsessed but I do know that I like the feeling of a close shave, not only for myself but also my husband.

Many people have their favorite brand or product they use for a close shave. I have tried several different razor blades, hair removal lotions and permanent hair removal devices. Several years ago the rechargeable permanent hair remover was the hot item for holiday gift giving. I received one from my husband. The first time I used it on my legs I had tears rolling down my face because it hurt so much. The device featured intertwined springs that rotated rapidly. You ran the springs over your legs and the hairs would get caught and would pull out. It was stated that this was most effective if the hair on the legs was longer to begin with. The claim was that once you had used this device for a period of time the close shave feel and look would last for long periods of time. The small area I was able to tolerate completing did have a close shave feel, but it was also red from the trauma of having the hair pulled out. About two years after this product hit the market I noticed many people were selling them on their garage sales. Like me, people did not want to experience pain to get a close shave. I have not noticed if this device is still on the market. My hope is that some improvements have been made on the product so that it is not so painful to use. I find that I still get the best results when using a safety razor. Many of the lotions have a strong smell and have irritated my skin to put it differently.

My husband has a beard that grows very quickly. This makes it a challenge for him to look like he has a close shave. He has tried several different razors both regular and electric. He prefers the multi edged razors. He does not think that the electric razor gives him a close shave. The electric razor also causes more skin irritation for him. If we are going go out in the evening after work he does need to shave a second time to have the close shave look. At times he will use the electric razor for the second shave of the day because this is a faster process taking this all into consideration,.
